KDES Career Week inspires students to explore future pathways
OKINAWA, Japan – Kadena Elementary School recently hosted an exciting and engaging Career Week, providing students with meaningful opportunities to explore careers, discover future goals, and make connections between classroom learning and the world of work. Through hands-on activities, themed events, and collaboration among staff, students, and families, Career Week brought learning to life for all grade levels.
Career Week kicked off with a series of themed dress-up days designed to highlight transferable skills and career pathways. During Future Skills Day, students wore sports gear to represent essential skills such as teamwork, leadership, and perseverance, skills that are valuable across countless career fields.
On Careers Dress-Up Day, students came dressed as careers they are interested in pursuing, sparking conversations about aspirations and the steps needed to reach those goals. The week also included College and Training School Day, where students proudly wore apparel representing colleges, universities, and technical training programs, helping them visualize future educational pathways.
Career exploration was thoughtfully integrated across grade levels. Students in grades 3–5 participated in Morning Meeting lessons that introduced basic career concepts and helped them understand how the skills they learn in school connect to future jobs.
For K–2 students, engaging “Paws in Job Land” activities provided age-appropriate opportunities to explore different careers in a fun and interactive way. These activities encouraged curiosity and early awareness of the many possibilities available to them.
One of the highlights of Career Week was the Career Fashion Show, featuring student innovators and parent volunteers who served as models. This event helped build student confidence while increasing awareness of a wide range of careers.
PK students also participated in their own Career Fashion Show, supported by two student innovators. The PK fashion show uniquely aligned with students’ clothing and recycling unit, as students created outfits using recycled materials, beautifully incorporating environmental responsibility and career exploration into early learning.
As part of Career Week, Ms. Bauman, KDES’s fifth-grade teacher, organized an engaging STEAM Day. Students explored careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math through hands-on, inquiry-based activities. The event encouraged creativity, problem-solving, and curiosity while helping students understand how STEAM skills translate to real-world careers.
Career Week was made possible through the dedication and collaboration of many staff members. School counselors Ms. Darby and Dr. Winn played a key role in coordinating career-focused learning, alongside Ms. McKoy and Ms. Ellis and the Student Innovators. Special recognition also goes to Ms. Bauman for STEAM Day and Ms. Pickens for leading the PK Career Fashion Show.
Through these collective efforts, KDES Career Week successfully empowered students to dream big, explore possibilities, and begin envisioning their future paths, one career connection at a time.
