March Madness Hits Kadena Elementary School

OKINAWA, JAPAN – Read Across America is always a great opportunity to get students reading. This year, the Kadena Elementary School RAA Committee decided to mix reading and fun by organizing a school-wide March Reading Madness event.
Popular books in a variety of categories were chosen for the baseline, and teachers voted on their favorites to narrow down the choices for a bracket style tournament. An interactive website was created that linked to read-alouds of each book, so families could listen to the books together and vote on their favorites. As the week progressed, books were narrowed down based student votes. The final books were voted on over the weekend, and the book crowned Kadena Elementary’s Favorite Book of 2025 was The Book with No Pictures by BJ Novak.
Additionally, the RAA Committee randomly chose a few names of students who voted each night to win a token to the KDES Book Vending Machine that is run by the Student Innovators. Students were so excited to pick out a new book, and the whole school had fun engaging with excellent picture books.
